Quilting...Oh My!

This is a project that I recently finished. It included six placemats and a very long table runner. It was my first true quilting experience...I just did it on my own machine at home...sewwww simple. However, I am not the proud owner of this pattern. I bummed it off Amy at the Quilt Shoppe, inc. (www.thequiltshopperigby.com) . Isn't it just adorable?
Anyway, next time you're looking to quilt something, just run it through your machine. It doesn't look as amazing, but it's still cute and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you did it yourself.

Love what you're doing!

So my advice tip for today is love the project you're doing and do it for you. Lately, I've become so consumed in doing things for other people, and suddenly they're looking great or their homes are looking great and I'm just tired and depressed because I could have some wonderful things, but I don't because I sold them all.
I've learned that the money I'm getting is so temporary, therefore making it short-term gratification. So make something for yourself! A bag, a wall-quilt, pillow, skirt, whatever, just do something for yourself!

Look to your closet first!

Just a little tip from me. I love to sew with denim more than anything. It doesn't always have that "oh so adorable" affect, but it works. Whenever I want to try something new, I just tear up an old pair of jeans and get to work. It's sturdy, completely machine washable, and it's free! It also makes life a little bit easier for all of your pressing (ironing) needs. So, next time you want to go for a test run first on something, just try an old pair of jeans. You'll have your results in no time!
Also, I've discovered that a lot of people also use just their old clothes to make things. For example, I have this favorite black-flowered shirt that I just love, but it just doesn't fit anymore. By using it with a project I'm still able to keep the fabric that I love by just cutting it up and sewing something fun, like a diaper bag.

Need a gift for your grad?

1 Very Large Towel (70" by 40")
3 Yards of 5/8" Ribbon
So, I came up with this because one of my girls from Young Womens is graduating and I was just frantic for a gift idea. I remembered making my own laundry bag for college and I just loved it, but I wanted to give her something that was easy to use and wash. I ran across these amazingly huge beach towels at Wal-Mart for only $13 and they are basically already prepped for you! All you have to do is fold the towel in half, run the cord through the ends of the towel (that's already been sewn for you) all the way around making your drawstring and then sew up both sides of the towl. Make sure that you triple stitch all of your ends for extra security.
Throw in a roll of quarters, some laundry detergent and you're good to go! I'm so excited about this gift I just can't contain myself!

Ragg Quilt

I first discovered Ragg Quilts when my sister made one for my first child. And then later my best friend, Roni taught me how simple they really are.
I think that these are my favorite types of blankets to make, just because they allow flaws. Perfect for any beginner seamstress! You just cut out your desired size square and sew them together. I just finished this one for my baby and it was so relaxing to make.
I make my squares 3" by 3" and then the blanket itself is 12 by 15 squares.

Thread Matters!

I'm not really an accessory person, in any part of my life, whether it be sewing, decorating, or just dressing myself. But I can say that your choice of thread on any project can make all the difference. I use a khaki thread on a lot of my projects, partly because it matches nearly everything and also because it adds just a delicate border. Most people won't really notice it's there, but without it a project can seem so boring.
So my advice, always choose your thread carefully.
